Photographer Agonizes For Hours Over Albino Squirrel Red Eye Removal |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||
January 29, 2012 It started out as just another routine gig taking pictures of squirrels for the yearly Squirrel Stowage study, except there was a problem. When Bob "Biff-Stop" Shutterson began to process the day's digital images he came across a lovely photo of an albino squirrel. That was when an unforseeable and impossible dilemma presented itself - what should be done about the albino squirrel's characteristically red eye? Bob's impressive suite of photo processing software could easily deal with red eye removal, but this raised thorny ethical questions. As a professional wildlife photographer Bob had a reputation to uphold for producing images of the highest quality as well as the most accurate naturalism. At the same time, the bright red eye in the photo was just begging for software intervention, and the squirrel in the photo just seemed to be sitting on that fence eyeing him as he fretted over what to do. It's often been said that things can take a sharp and nasty turn for the worse when dealing with the so-called lower furry realms and that seems to be what happened here. After agonizing for several days over this dilemma, a disheveled and unshaven photographer checked himself into the Rodent Habitat Research facility in Florence, South Dakota. Known as the "Hazeldon" of sqiurinary and murinary disorders, the facility has earned it's reputation and we can all rest assured that the staff there will provide the best possible care. |

Image processing has come a long way in recent years. At the right we can see what the results would have been had Bob applied his professional-grade red eye removal tool in this situation. |

Bob took one last photo out the back window of his house before checking himself in for therapy. Experts say this is what may have finally pushed him over the edge. Say kids! Can you see how many albino squirrels are in this picture? |
