Scary Cowboy Dude Continues to Appear in Random Photos |

November 1, 2009 What can only be described as a 'scary cowboy dude' has been showing up randomly in personal photos of family members, friends, vacation spots, all the things people normally take pictures of. The scary cowboy dude first appeared slouched on the hood of a pickup truck in a photo taken in 1983 with a 35mm film camera in the days before the advent of digital photography. "All's I know is that I was taking a picture of my truck, sorta silhouetted against the sunset", sez Biff Obliffgatory. "After developing the photo in the darkroom I hung it up to dry, there was no cowboy at that point in time. When I came back several hours later, there he was, sittin' right there on the hood!" Since appearing in that first photo, the phantom image has begun showing up without warning in digital as well as film photos; in the case of digital photos, he often appears after the pictures have been organized into slideshows or folders on hard drives, DVDs or other storage media. Some in the industry blame these occurrences on 'maverick algorithms' in the image processing software used in digital cameras, but this doesn't explain how the phenomena began first in analog photography. Popular sentiment attributes these apparitions as impressions of the late Fess Fossum, the last real American cowboy, who died in 1982. |

This photo, dated 1976 is said to be a picture of Fess Fossum, the last real American cowboy. Living in the vicinty of Mandaree, North Dakota, Fess was said to lead a dusky existence, inhabiting the shadowlands as it were, eschewing tobacco and preferring to keep to "hisseff." |
