May 31st, 2009 It's been common knowledge for years - a dog's mouth is cleaner than a human's, but exactly how much cleaner is only now being discovered. "Clean enough to sterilize surgical equipment, that's how clean" , sez Biff Pavlov, head surgeon at Boston's prestigious Splenectomy Center. "Basically these dogs are providing us quick, real-time sterilization of surgical tools in an economic fashion, something we couldn't get from the old, out-dated and expensive autoclaves of the past." "Just round up a few strays from the alley behind the hospital, train them to sit, and you've got yourself a way to provide sterile instruments during a surgical procedure. And they don't object to leftovers from hospital food trays, which typically are available in abundance." |
